I never recall reading anywhere in any yoga text even the mention of the word "competition." I think what it all ultimately boils down to is the prominence of the ego. Yoga classes with it is more like gymnastics anyway, so I think mentioning the fact that yoga isn't really about striking the fanciest pose in class could ease the tension and eliminate (hopefully) the competition.

I love twists! They always work for my tricky lower back. And I like the idea that I'm "wringing out" bad stuff and opening up the space for new energy. Ahhh--just thinking about spinal twists makes me feel good.
Also, your relatives sound a lot more willing than mine!

Studio Rincon opened in West Menlo Park in May, 2010. A couple of Devi Yoga's teachers also teach there. Rincon also offers dance classes, so it's not strictly a yoga studio. Still, I enjoy the studio and find the yoga teachers are very dedicated to the practice.

I imagine it was financial pressures in the end. There are two owners, making the business that bit more complicated to ride through rocky times.
